Chelsea Market: Industrial scenography in practice
The factory that became a popular tourist market
One of the most famous markets in New York City, and a must-see for tourists, is the Chelsea Market - a food hall offering best of world cuisine.
Located in the Meatpacking District, a former industrial neighborhood that has become a gastronomic hub in New York, the building previously housed the Nabisco biscuit factory.
Today, the building is a multi-use commercial hub that houses the office for large companies such as Google, Youtube, Disney on the upper floors and a market full of unique vendors on the ground floor.
The building is surrounded by some of the city's cultural highlights, such as The Highline, The Little Island, and The Standard Hotel.
The architecture and scenography of the building is very unique with an industrial and rustic interior that harkens back to its origins and provides a special charm to the market. I identified 10 scenic elements that create this unique industrial feeling:
1. Apparent structure
The main elements are brick, beams, pipes, wires, floor plates and the existing roof.
2. Industrial Machines
The building repurposes many of the old machines from the factory for more practical uses. You can see in this image how a pane of glass added to a large machinery component created a new table.
3. Heavy rocks
3. Industrial objects
The balance of rusty steel garbage cans with new silver tops and modern typography show a balance of old and new that make the building unique.
Large industrial sized fans remain connected to the roof structure.
4. Industrial Signage
5. '’Storytelling Exibitions" at the entrance and exit
